Mabel's Home Birth

Saturday evening I realized I was having regular Braxton Hicks and nothing I did seem to help them go away. So I called one of my midwives around 9 and told her what was going on. She said that it can be pretty normal and there was a chance they could still go away and just try to ignore them if possible. I had slept a lot that day, but thankfully I was able to actually fall asleep that night! BYU had a game that night that didn’t start until 10 ET, so Trevor was up really late. He didn’t go to bed until 2:30AM! But he still says it was worth it…ha!

Around 4:30AM my contractions woke me up. I read and re-read the paper I was given of “when to call the midwife,” and realized that this was it. Two weeks before our due date! I called the midwives and they said they would head over soon.

I knew I wasn’t “far along” in the birthing process, but the whole pregnancy I’d been nervous about having a repeat of Rosie’s birth - her crowning in the car - I didn’t want that again! Too stressful! Plus, they always say that the second birth goes faster than the first. So that’s why I asked everyone to come when they did.

Bridget and Chrissy (midwives) showed up around 7:30 and checked my vitals. She had been head down for the last few months and her little booty was still high up in my belly. Her position was perfect.

I put on Hypnobabies’ “Birthing Day Affirmations” track and put it on repeat. It really calmed me down and helped me relax. A couple hours later, my in-laws left with Rosie. I didn’t really want Rosie in the house (plus other people). Not only did I not want Rosie to hear me yelling, but I found it very distracting hearing her downstairs playing. It was easier for me to relax with everyone gone.

By the time I had hit 9 hours of laboring (not counting the contractions from the night before) I was ready to be done! It had already been 2 hours longer than Rosie’s, so I was feeling frustrated and confused. WHY wasn’t this baby here already? I thought for sure this one would only be 5 hours tops.

I can’t remember why, but Trevor had to leave the room for a minute and I was having a bad contraction, and I was bent over, leaning on the tub (which was still empty), and Bridget came over and pushed on my lower back…It did not feel good. After the contraction I stood up and just started crying. I’m not sure why, but I lost it at that point. Bridget, Chrissy, and Erin (apprentice) were all in there and I just felt so weak and helpless at that moment. In my mind I thought I was going to “rock this homebirth” and it was going to be easy, calm, and peaceful. This was my second time around and I was going to have my dream, zen-like birth. And right then I realized that I was exhausted, hurting, and just wanted to throw in the towel. Sooooo totally NOT rocking it.

I just wiped my eyes and kinda shrugged, “I’m really tired…” Bridget rubbed my arm and was totally understanding and said, “That’s Ok, that’s ok. This is hard work. You’re doing fine. This is good. Let’s go ahead and fill the tub up. A change of pace is a good thing.”

They then began filling up the tub and Bridget had me rest on my bed on my knees with my head down and tailbone up. Then she’d push on my back during the contractions and instruct me to breathe out low tones then take a deep relaxing breath at the end of each one. The pressing on my back still did NOT feel good, but the low tones gave me something to focus on, where earlier I was just kind of moaning and shouting randomly. Trevor stayed right next to me holding my hand the entire time. If he ever did need to step away, he would always RUN right back to be next to me.

I was still up on the bed, with the tub filling, when they stopped the water to let the water heater catch up. So they started boiling water downstairs on the stove and in the skillet! And every few minutes they would be up with a bowl of hot water to dump in the tub J

After a while they were able to turn the hose back on, fill the tub, and let me get in.
It felt so good! I kinda sat on my knees, with my body leaning over the pool towards the bed. While Trevor sat on the bed holding my hands and me. The contractions just got stronger and stronger. I could feel so many different things going on in my body.

I was in the water for maybe 10 minutes when my water finally broke! Hallelujah! I shouted, “my water broke!” and they came running in and the energy in the room changed. They were busy moving around getting gloves on and grabbing their gear. Chrissy checked the baby’s heart rate but was having a hard time finding the heartbeat this time, it wasn’t where it had been earlier, but didn’t think much of it.

And then my body started pushing. I could feel my baby starting to move down my body and beginning to crown. I could also feel the ring of fire this time. Last time this all happened in a car and I was so distracted that I didn’t feel any of it…I could definitely feel it this time. And as tough as it was, I was just relieved this was almost over!!! I pushed for maybe a 2 minutes then heard “We’ve got feet!”

Both Trevor and I shouted, “Is she alright?!!” Bridget calmly said, “She’s fine, don’t worry.” Trevor leaned into me and said, “It’s all ok, their faces look completely calm.” My body started pushing again and this time she came out to her chest. They then said, “Wait until your body starts pushing again.” But that didn’t happen! So we all just sat there for a moment waiting for my body to push but nothing happened. So they said, “Ok mamma, we’ve got to get your baby out so we’re going to need you to push hard.” So I started pushing. They just kept saying “push mamma push.” But it was hard! Not in a painful hard way, but a “how do I make my body do this?” kind of way. They told Trevor, “keep telling her to push.” He did, and I kept pushing, and then BAM it was all over. I felt instant relief, Bridget flipped me quickly around, and they placed our baby right on my chest.

They placed a towel over Mabel and me and we just sat in the tub soaking in the moment. She was breathing and she was BEAUTIFUL!

After 10 minutes, they cut the cord and I handed Mabel to Trevor and they helped me dry off and climb out of the tub and straight into my bed.

So here’s what we think happened - The placenta came out the same time with Mabel. So they think that the placenta was in the way, so she must have had to go under and around the placenta which caused her to flip. Bridget said it was a good thing I didn’t have her check me a second time when she offered, because otherwise we would have had to pack up and go straight to the hospital, which would probably have resulted in a c-section. Midwives can’t legally do planned breech home births. They also said it was a good thing that we did a water birth because the warm water keeps the baby from taking a breath. I guess when babies are born breeched they’ll feel the cold air on their legs, which then stimulates them to breathe. But since Mabel was going from warm to warm AND they could feel that the cord was still pulsing, they knew she was ok. Phew!

They then did Mabel’s exam and she was so sweet the whole time, just calmly looking around. She would let out cries whenever she was moved, but that’s fair J She weighed 7lbs 6oz! That’s big compared to Rosie!

The midwives then started cleaning everything up while Trevor, Mabel, and I laid in bed loving the moment! We are so happy and feeling so blessed!

Cursed?

I think February cursed us. The whole month was non-stop sickness. I had a bad cold for a week, then Rosie got the cold for a week, then she had an ear infection (I think), then she got a stomach bug, then I got the stomach bug. Everything was awful, but the stomach bug was the worst. It was our first time experiencing a child throwing up - AND in the middle of the night.

At 3AM we hear Rosie shouting "Uh oh! Uh oh!" We ran into her room to find her standing in her crib with vomit all over her, her bed, her stuffed animals, and the carpet. Then it was the 3 of us, standing in the bathroom, Rosie shaking, totally freaked out, and Trevor and me staring at each other thinking, "I don't know what to do!" But then the parental gears kicked in and we took charge. Do you ever have those moments where you are just "lost" and it takes you a second?

She threw up 5 more times that night, and by the last 2 times we were able to get all of the throw up in the bowl! Booya! She had symptoms for 2 more days. Then on the day when she seemed to be getting better, the nastiness hit me! Thankfully, Trevor had 2 snow days in a row and was able to stay home and take care of Rosie and me. Phew!

On a positive note, I had been really junking out the week before and was feeling a little chubby. But after this bug I feel trim and sexy again.

Anyway, after loads, and loads, and loads of laundry, and hours in the kitchen cleaning dishes, our house is FINALLY back to normal. Even though it's still cold outside, I plan on opening all of the windows and letting some new, fresh air in and letting the cursed air out. Rosie and I deserve one heck of immune system this month.

The Thorpe Family Sleeps

It's amazing what a good, uninterrupted night of sleep will do for you. For the first time in 18 months I am sleeping through the night. Trevor, Rosie, and Lindsey are all sleeping through the night! She's never been a great sleeper, she's always nursed at least two times a night, but the last few months she was nursing around 5 times a night. Personally, that's TOO much. So once we got settled here in Virginia, we decided to make the move and get her to sleep through the night and in her own room. I relied heavily on The Baby Whisperer forums.

First, we got her out of our bed. I put her crib RIGHT next to my side of the bed with the railings up for the first part of the night while she slept in there alone. Then when it was time for me to go to bed I would ever so quietly drop the railing and move it to the other side of the room. This way her mattress could be flush to our bed - it was a pain in the butt, and a full body work out, but I wanted this to be a smooth transition for her.

Then I night weaned. I put my FOOT DOWN to nursing 5 times a night. It had seriously gotten out of hand. In the beginning all of her night wakings were caused by her tummy issues so I'd always nursed her back to sleep. It was the best way for all of us to sleep. But since we took her off of pasteurized milk and started taking her to a chiropractor, her gassy nights are no more! She then was only waking out of habit and then out of habit I would nurse her back to sleep. Anyway, the first week she'd wake up over and over again and I would either pat her bum or rock her back to sleep. Neither one of us got much sleep that week, but she seemed to be getting the hang of it. Soooo...

We moved her into her own room. Ahhhhh! I was a sad momma that night, but Rosie loved it. It was not sad to her at all and mostly just giggled about it - thanks a lot, Rosie, for being so sensitive to your mother! But she did really well! She did still wake up crying, and required me to go rock her back to sleep, but that only lasted about a week.

Two weeks later, she's SLEEPING! I remember the first night, I woke up at 5 o'clock freaking out! Why hasn't she cried out?! What's wrong?! Oh, wait, she's just peacefully sleeping :)

Rosie Lately

-Maybe just a teensy bit vain. She loves to look at herself in a mirror. If I were as cute as her I would want to look at myself all of the time too! But she loves to dress herself right now. Well, TRY to dress herself. She'll then run over to the mirror to check herself out.

-So full of life.

-Prefers her sippy cup to be upside down when she drinks.

- Does NOT like to sit still. Church is exhausting. Thankfully, everyone in our ward is so sweet and don't mind her rummaging through their bags. For awhile I was thinking this is just how babies/toddlers are, but then I went to toddlers in the library and she was the ONLY child acting crazy. All of the other little ones were quietly sitting in their mamma's lap while my child was trying to climb on top of all of the well behaved children.

-Loves meat. She's our mini carnivore.

-Has 11 teeth. -Struggles with sleeping...again...shortly after I blogged about her sleeping well, she decided she no longer wanted to take 2 naps, only 1. This transition has been rough. And all of the sleep books I've read pretty much only say, "you're just gonna have to tough it out". Most mornings she wakes up around 5AM! Rosie just hasn't been blessed with the gift of sleep.

-Loves to help me put on makeup. After she has completely emptied out my makeup bag, she then takes my brushes, taps them on the closed cases, then brushes it on my face. It's really cute.

-Is officially walking and it's the cutest thing. She leads with her belly and just toddles around. Sure there are a bunch of 9-month-olds sprinting past her, but 15 months is a fine time to begin walking I say.

-Turns random objects into phones and then has little conversations.

-Can handle raw dairy. Yay!!! I had forgotten how good a glass of milk could taste. When I was lactose intolerant growing up, raw dairy helped a lot, so I don't know why I didn't think of it when we first noticed the problem. I'm just excited we don't have to use that fake cheese stuff anymore - yuck!

-Only wants mamma in the middle of the night. If I'm really tired, Trevor will take her out of the room to bounce her back to sleep, but as soon as she sees him coming around the bed for her she'll start saying "No, no, no, no." and wrap her arms and legs around me. She'll then shout "Mama!" with her arms stretched out as he carries her out of the room. Sometimes I feel a little bad, but it usually makes me smile because it's so cute.

It's been such a joy to watch her learn and grow. I'm constantly saying, "wait, when did she learn to do that?" They're such simple things like putting the lid back on a jar, or shutting the dishwasher, but it's these little things that bring the biggest smile on my face.

Photo Challenge

A few months ago I bought a Rebel 2Ti and a 50mm lens. I mainly bought them so I could have nice snapshots of the fam, but I was having a heck of a time really learning how to use the camera with a model who doesn't sit still. Soooooo I decided to try a photo challenge to encourage me to use my camera every day and to take pictures of things other than Rosie - no offense Rosie.

I found this challenge on Pinterest, but I can't find it on the owners SITE
Anyway, so I ended up only taking like 3 of the pictures on the actual day and Rosie still ended up being in half of the shots, BUT I do feel like I learned a lot during this last month and I had a lot of fun doing it.

I was happy with a lot of the shots until I took a quick glance at my mom and sister's photography websites and realized I still have a LOT to learn. They both do photography professionally and they both ROCK at it. You can find my mom's site HERE and my sister's site HERE

1. Peace

2. Skyline

3. Something you wore today

4. Fun!

5. Bird - I used my Mom's Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS. I made me feel so professional. It was long and HEAVY, but way cool to use!

6. You - all of the self shots were a pain in the butt. I need one of those clicker things.

7. Someone that inspires you.

8. A smell you adore - we make bread every other week and I still LOVE the smell of it.

9. Something you do every day - even if it's just for a minute

10. A favorite word.

11. Kitchen - I stopped water! I thought only the really fancy shmancy cameras could do that!

12. Something that makes you happy - these two

13. Mum

14. Grass

15. Love - It's Trev and me holding hands...in case you can't tell :)

16. What you're reading - I Am a Bunny

Us Lately

Rosie:
-Sick for the first time last weekend. She had a fever for a few days which made me so nervous! I think I took her temperature every 5 minutes. Turned out to be roseola. For 3 days she refused to sleep unless she was draped across our chest. It was really sweet.
-One day we found her quietly sucking on a bag of chocolate chips. She managed to somehow get a tiny, little hole in the bag and was sucking the chocolate out!

-She's a dancing fool! She busts a move whenever she hears music - whether she's sitting, crawling, or standing she'll dance. She seems to really dig Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, but she loooves Katy Perry's "Dark Horse". Can baby's have a favorite song? Maybe it's a coincidence, but the last few times it's been on she's paused what she was doing, stared at the speakers, then started shaking it. Ug. It's so adorable.

-She always wants Mooney with her but can't walk without assistance, so she sticks him in her mouth and just drags him around.

-Her favorite toy at the moment is a tool box. She crawls up and down from it.
-Since Rosie sleeps with us, we have the end of her crib right up to my side of the bed to create a "wall" to keep her from falling out - though it's usually me who uses it as a wall since I'm always either smashed up against it or squished in the middle between her and Trevor. We also have pillows leaning against the bed, so if she happens to get past the crib she'll fall on pillows. So one night I wake up to her whining, rush out of bed, and found her in the hallway just sitting there by herself. She somehow fell/rolled out of bed and crawled to the hallway and was sitting there waiting for someone to come get her!

Trevor:
He's been gone almost every weekend these last few months for "Lincoln Days" which are fundraisers that the counties here in Idaho put on. There are 44 counties and almost all of them have one. He'd go to one Friday night, then Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night. Most of the time he'd make it home late Saturday night, but a few times it'd be an overnighter - which I HATE!!! I get too scared and think of every bad scenario. A couple of times Rosie and I went with him. It was hilarious because I got to hold Rosie maybe 5 minutes the whole 2 hours. The rest of the time she was off with different women. Then she'd come back to me with campaign stickers stuck to her. A little walking billboard! Anyway, Rosie and I are so happy he only has a few Lincoln Days left. Phew!

Me:
-Had a nasty bout of mastitis. It was awful and the fever was intense. I had strong, teeth chattering shivers that wouldn't go away and a really high temperature. At one point it was 106*. Oops. I really was hoping that my fever would take care of the infection so I wouldn't have to take any antibiotics. I've had thrush from antibiotics before and really didn't want to get it again or give it to Rosie. Well the fever wasn't breaking so I finally went to the doctor, got the antibiotics, took lots of acidophilus and grapefruit seed extract, and we all turned out ok!
-I've been dairy free for the last 2 months and Rosie is much happier for it. She's always had tummy troubles at night, but my dairy intake was already pretty low so I really didn't think dairy was the problem. I feel bad that it took us so long to figure it out! Probably soon we'll try introducing goat cheese and then maybe trying real cheese again.

Us:
-Sleep training. We finally bit the bullet. From 0-9months Rosie was a pretty good sleeper. Naps and bedtime weren't perfect, but they went smoothly enough to keep us all happy. Then at 9 months it all went terribly, TERRIBLY wrong. We spent hours every day and night trying to bounce her to sleep. We got around 4-5 hours of sleep. We were physically and emotionally exhausted. All of that bouncing was killing our backs and making all three of us grouchy. Dealing with a newborn's sleep/feed schedule seemed easier than this. It went on for 3 months until we finally let her cry herself to sleep. It was torture but it was needed. And now we're all sleeping again! It's amaaaazing! She still wakes up once or twice to eat, but that's no biggie.
-We're all finally starting to feel well rested. Hallelujah!

Locked Out

The dangerous stuff in the kitchen is locked away from Rosie (which infuriates her) so she's safe to come and go as she pleases. But sometimes it's nice to be in the kitchen and not have ALL of the tupperware ALL over the floor. This was the first time with the gate up and Rosie was fascinated by it and kept squishing her face up on it. We took over a dozen funny pictures. Oh Rosie...

Us Lately

January was nice. It was a chance for us to pause and take a breath! November and December were CRAZY. Trevor's big 2-day meetings for work and my big work meeting in Utah were just 2 days apart. Meaning the weeks leading up to our meetings were incredibly stressful with very little sleep. It didn't help that that Rosie's sleep was AWFUL during these months. She'd wake up in the middle of the night for hours at a time. Thankfully now she's sleeping MUCH better. Which makes us think that she probably sensed our stress and it affected her sleep. Her 6 new teeth probably played a role too...

So this last month we stayed in a lot. We never really felt the need to leave. Part of that is because Rosie's so entertaining. It's so much fun to watch her learn and grow. Like learning words! She's got Mamma, Please, Bye-bye, Baby, she's working on Daddy, and her favorite word is No. We joke how she's probably confused what "bye-bye" means since we spend at least 5 minutes waving and trying to get her to say "bu-bye"! She's probably thinking instead of "goodbye" it means "let's-spend-5-minutes-pretending-like-we're-going-to-leave".

We've also been working on some home projects. Cleaning, baby proofing (over night everything in our home became dangerous), and hanging pictures!

Finally! These pictures and frames had been leaning against the wall for months, tempting Rosie to knock them over. And since Rosie is TERRIBLE with temptations - like this girl has no self control - she would knock them over repeatedly. I know I'm to blame for leaving them within her reach, but it took me a long time to find the right frames, spray paint a few of them, and then finally hang them. The top left frame will be our holiday frame and will hold a picture of whatever holiday is coming up. Or at least that's the plan. It'll probably sit empty for another month or two...

Anyway, things are good. We're alive, happy, and mostly well rested.

Resolutions

The other day I was holding Rosie on my hip and noticed just how much she has grown. It wasn't that long ago that she needed my full support to be held and now she easily sits right on my hip, practically doing it all by herself. I don't know when that change happened. When was that moment that she no longer needed me to hold that big head of hers? I can't believe how quickly time flies! I roll my eyes every time I say that. And since time keeps speeding up, I want to change things so I can have more quality time with the two cuties above. So my 2014 New Years Resolution, and now Life Resolution, is to live in the PRESENT.

So I've been thinking a lot about HOW I'm going to do this and here's what I've got so far:

#1 Prioritize. I'm a full-time wife/mother with a full-time job and both roles keep me busy with a long To-Do list. This list is full of GOOD things to work on, but I need to figure out what are the BEST things to work on. Like Elder Oaks Good, Better, Best talk - "The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them." Sad but true. I get so caught up on getting everything crossed off that stupid list of mine that I sometimes forget to pause and do simple yet important things like sit on the ground and read "Is your Mamma a Llamma" with my sweet baby. I could either have a clean kitchen or play with Rosie. Typing it out makes me think "DUH! Play with Rosie!" But sometimes in the moment I feel like getting the house cleaned is so, so, so important. Dumb! I like the quote, "Be Present not Perfect". I think I'm going to print that out and hang it somewhere as a reminder!

#2 Temple. Ug. Not "ug" to the temple, but "ug" to our poor attendance lately! Having a baby and going to the temple has been harder than I thought it would be. It's hard enough to get to the grocery store in one piece (OK, it's not that bad). I love this quote: "If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present." I get anxious a lot, but I've noticed that the times I'm the least anxious are when I'm in the temple. I truly feel peace there. And if peace means I'm living in the present, then the temple is where it's at! So I'm definitely going to try and get there more often this year.

#3. Yoga. It slows me down and centers me. I think I'd like to have a set time every day to practice and remind myself to slow down and breathe.

#4. Unplug. This one's hard because my job requires me to be on my computer for a good amount of time each day. So I'm not sure how to do this one. Maybe say no technology on Sundays? I'll have to think more on this one...

If anyone out there has any tips on being present, please let me know!!! I would love, love, love to hear them!

*I wrote this post awhile ago but decided not to post it, then a woman at church gave a talk on this exact topic so I figured it must be a sign share it :)

Us Lately

Rosie:
- 9 months old
- She loves blowing raspberries and will happily do so all day long. I'll stick her in her crib for a nap and she'll just sit in there for an hour laughing and blowing raspberries.
- She calls me Mama! Or at least we're pretty sure she's talking about me. She started saying mama a couple months ago, but we figured it was just baby talk, but now it really seems like she's directing the "mama" to me! And I love it! She'll say it when she's chasing after me, when I come into the same room as her, or when she's frustrated with her daddy and she wants me ;)
- She very much dislikes sleep. She used to be a good sleeper, but now she's rotten at it. She doesn't want to fall asleep and she doesn't want to stay asleep. I've read that sleep habits can change around 9 months due to brain development (or something like that), plus I think she may be teething. Her amber necklace really has worked wonders, she's extremely happy and smiley during the day (unlike her last teething episode w/out the necklace), but I guess it's not the end all cure all.
- The speediest army crawler around. She keeps me on my toes.
- She has the best eye-sight. She can somehow spot every tiny thing in the carpet, army crawl to it, then puts it in her mouth. I swear I vacuum at least every other day!

Trevor:
-He's the Baby Whisperer - a title he gave himself. Somehow he can get her to fall asleep! It takes some time, and a lot of patience but he does it! Thank goodness for Trevor, the Baby Whisperer.

Me:
- Exhausted from work and my non-sleeping baby
- Turned a year older this month. 27. What?!? For some reason 27 seems soooo much older than 26. Maybe because I'm now in my "late 20's". Woah.
- On my birthday my new vacuum came in the mail! If my age doesn't prove I'm getting old, then my excitement for a new vacuum does for sure.

US:
- We've been feeling festive this year! I think having a baby to share Christmas with has something to do with it. But being festive takes work AND money. We'd planned to buy a beautiful, green Christmas tree from the lot across the street but were SHOCKED at how much money a little, dead tree costs. So I bought the cute, fake, 2-footer above. It works perfectly for us.
